50 Journal Prompts for Self-Reflection

A blank page is the hardest part of journaling. The trick is to start with a question rather than an empty page — a good prompt gives your thoughts somewhere to go. Below are 50 journal prompts grouped by theme, whether you’re keeping a gratitude journal, working through a hard week, or just building a daily writing habit.

You don’t need to answer them in order. Pick one that catches your eye, set a timer for five minutes, and write without editing.

How to Start Journaling

If you’ve never kept a journal, three small rules make it stick:

  1. Keep it short. Five minutes and a few sentences is a real entry. Consistency beats length.
  2. Be honest, not polished. No one is grading this. Spelling and grammar don’t matter.
  3. Pick a fixed time. Right after waking or just before bed anchors the habit to something you already do.

Gratitude Journal Prompts

  • What are three things that went well today?
  • Who is someone you’re grateful for, and why?
  • What is something about your body or health you appreciate?
  • What small comfort did you enjoy today — a coffee, a song, a quiet moment?
  • What is something you have now that you once hoped for?
  • What made you smile this week?
  • What is a challenge you’re secretly grateful for?

Prompts for Self-Awareness

  • What am I feeling right now, and where do I feel it in my body?
  • What drained my energy today? What restored it?
  • When did I feel most like myself this week?
  • What am I avoiding, and what am I afraid would happen if I faced it?
  • What would I do differently if no one were watching?
  • What story do I keep telling myself that might not be true?
  • What do I need more of in my life? Less of?

Prompts for Processing a Hard Day

  • What happened, in plain facts, without judgment?
  • What part of this is actually in my control?
  • What would I say to a friend going through this?
  • What is one small thing that would make tomorrow easier?
  • What did today teach me, even if it was painful?

Prompts for Goals and Growth

  • Where do I want to be one year from now?
  • What is one habit that would change my life if I kept it for 90 days?
  • What did I do today that moved me toward something that matters?
  • What is a fear that’s holding me back, and what’s the smallest step past it?
  • Who do I want to become, and how did today reflect that?
  • What would I attempt if I knew I couldn’t fail?

Prompts for Relationships

  • Who did I connect with today, and how did it feel?
  • Is there anything I need to say to someone that I’ve been putting off?
  • How did I show up for the people around me this week?
  • What kind of friend, partner, or parent do I want to be?

Prompts for Winding Down

  • What is one thing I want to let go of before I sleep?
  • What am I looking forward to tomorrow?
  • What went better than I expected today?
  • If today had a title, what would it be?
